What a batch is
A batch is material produced in one run under one set of conditions. Everything in it shares a history, which is what makes a single analysis valid for all of it. That shared history is also why a problem found in one vial is a question about the whole batch.
Three places, one number
The batch number appears on the vial label, on the outer box and on the Certificate of Analysis. All three must agree. A mismatch means either a labelling error or that the certificate belongs to different material, and both are worth resolving before the vial is opened.
This is the single most useful check a customer can perform without instruments, and it takes about ten seconds.
What traceability is for
It works in both directions: from a vial back to its production and analysis records, and from a production record forward to everywhere that material went. The first matters when a result looks wrong and you need to know whether the material changed. The second matters if a batch ever needs to be withdrawn.
Why researchers should record it too
Where a result changes between experiments, batch is among the first variables to check. Without a record linking each experiment to a batch, that check cannot be made, and an ordinary batch-to-batch difference becomes an unexplained anomaly.
