The AMPK pathway

AMPK is the sensor that detects when a cell is short of energy and switches its priorities accordingly.

How it senses

AMP-activated protein kinase responds to the ratio of AMP and ADP to ATP. When ATP falls and AMP rises, AMPK is activated. It is a direct read-out of energy status rather than a signal about any particular nutrient.

What it does

Activated AMPK promotes pathways that generate ATP and suppresses those that consume it — increasing glucose uptake and fatty acid oxidation while inhibiting synthesis of lipids and proteins. It also influences mitochondrial biogenesis and autophagy.

Why it recurs in this literature

Because it sits at the junction of energy status and cellular response, AMPK appears in research on a wide range of metabolic compounds. That ubiquity is worth reading carefully: "activates AMPK" describes an intersection with a central pathway, not a specific outcome.
