Multi-component preparations

A combination is not a compound. Evaluating one means evaluating each component separately.

What the stated total means

A total content figure describes the preparation as a whole. It does not tell you the split between components, and the split is what determines behaviour. Two preparations with the same total and different ratios are different materials.

Evaluating one

Each component has its own literature, its own stability profile and its own solvent compatibility. There is rarely research on the combination itself, so any assessment is necessarily component by component.

Handling

A combination should be treated as having the handling requirements of its least stable component. If one constituent is light-sensitive or incompatible with a preserved diluent, that constraint applies to the whole preparation.

Analysis

Purity for a multi-component material means something different: the chromatogram contains several intended peaks, so a single purity percentage is less informative than for a single compound. Documentation should identify each component.
