Breadth usually means brokerage
A supplier listing hundreds of compounds is rarely making them. It is buying them, from varying sources, with varying documentation, and the consistency of any given item depends on who supplied that batch.
For a researcher, that shows up as a batch behaving differently from the last one with no way to find out why.
Consistency is the product
A reference material is only useful if it is the same next time. Carrying a small range manufactured and tested to one process means a batch bought this year behaves like a batch bought last year — and where it does not, the records exist to establish what changed.
What that costs
It means saying no to requests for compounds outside the range, which is a real cost to a shop. It is the correct trade for material sold on the strength of its documentation.
